This new body of work signifies a closer examination of Holly’s interior life and all the ebbs and flows of energy that life brings. Emotions and sensations have become the subject which are subtle and transitory.

“When I look at this work, I feel different types of energy; some surge immediately to the surface while others are slower and reveal themselves softly. I have always understood the world through my emotional and physical sensations which is why I paint in this expressionist way. There have always been moments of abstraction in my work but now I feel compelled to bring my subjective response to the forefront. I am trying to harness the paint in a way that is a direct transfer of my energy. Painting for me is really painting when I am fully present and making decisions that are looking beyond what I think is possible.”

Internal Landscapes is an undulating weather report of life. It portrays a balanced environment that enjoys the full spectrum of seasons. Seasons are observed as parallels of an internal and external experience. Thoughts are merely suggested in the titles, implying enveloping moments that mimic elemental events and vice versa.

Holly’s application of colour is refreshingly, excitingly bold. The paintings are vibrant and charged, depicting starkly different states of being that are at once relatable, memorable and fleeting. Holly’s painting style is deliberate and unrestrained, with the actual flow of mark making quite apparent within the individual work. Layers upon layers of paint add tangible peaks and craters, displaying remarkable depth that is deeply immersive and, despite the high frenetic energy under which they were created, meditative.

Internal Landscapes documents the symbiosis between interior thought and surrounding environment, oscillating between the two and blending them thoroughly into a harmonious whole.

During February 2022, Holly will be painting a large scale wall mural at the premises of award winning Coll Architecture and F3 Design. The mural will depict a pathway leading into the bush through a bold use of colour and abstract marks. The mural will carry onto the inside of the building, bringing the outside in, an idea that is prevalent in the warehouse where offices are inside glass houses with greenery on the outside.

Visitors are welcome to come have a look at the process and final result at 14 Walker Street.

Located in beautiful Wanaka, the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize is Holy Family Catholic School's main fundraiser and our aim is to foster and encourage New Zealand artists.

This annual event attracts artists from around New Zealand and is becoming a nationally recognised art award. The winning prize of $10,000 is proudly sponsored by Craigs Investment Partners. In addition there are a number of merit prizes sponsored by the local community.

All the artworks are available for sale on the Opening Night and during the exhibition period.
All proceeds raised will go to our School.

The Parkin Prize is a national award and an annual exhibition held at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Each year the winning entry will be purchased and added to a unique collection of drawings by New Zealand artists.

The Parkin Prize has been established by Chris Parkin, an arts patron and former owner of New Zealand’s only boutique art hotel – Museum Art Hotel in Wellington.

The award is open to anyone who lives permanently in New Zealand or has New Zealand citizenship.

Drawing ‘lives through magic’ claimed New York artist Keith Haring, and The Parkin Prize will seek to capture the spirit of invention, risk and discovery that is fundamental to drawing and making art.  

The competition, in association with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, aims to play an important role in fostering drawing practice. 

“As a dedicated supporter of the arts I believe it is essential to offer a national award of this significance and highlights the depth and skill of drawing practice in New Zealand.  Internationally we are seeing a resurgence of interest in drawing as the basis of all visual art forms. Not only will it empower talented artists with a sense of the importance of their practice, but it will also see the establishment of a unique collection of New Zealand art through the acquisition of the winning drawings,” said Parkin.

Fleeting, dynamic, transitory… painter Holly Zandbergen has captured the ever-shifting light of the South Island fiords as never before.

The New Zealand artist’s diptych Fiordland is part of her new show Ephemeral Worlds, a dreamy combination of large-scale landscapes and floral works.

“Flowers are ephemeral,” says the Christchurch-based painter, “as is the light and atmosphere in the landscape.”

This is Zandbergen’s second solo exhibition at Black Asterisk, following her botanicals-inspired Compositions of Nature series in 2018. In 2019 she was chosen as the gallery’s feature artist at the Auckland Art Fair. She also presented her second successful solo show Touch, at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery in London.

Despite her naturalistic style, Zandbergen’s grandness of vision extends beyond the photographic, reflecting the changing essence of light, depending on the day, the season, and the contrast of shadow and light unique to our atmosphere.

Applying oil to canvas using the impasto method is for Zandbergen an instinctive and meditative experience in which speed, force and motion result in endless possibilities. Her landscapes have drawn admiration for their richly textured brushwork.

Meanwhile, her floral pieces, far from hackneyed garden scenes, “exhibit a freedom of colour and gestural handling that one associates with late Monet”, according to Art New Zealand.

Ephemeral Worlds marks an important next step in Zandbergen’s career, one which has blossomed internationally in recent years. Since graduating from the Dunedin School of Art in 2013, she has exhibited in London, New York, Toronto, Seattle, and her hometown of Timaru.

In 2015, she was named Best Young Artist at the National Open Art Competition at London’s Royal College of Art. She was also the winner of the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin.

“No matter which subject I am painting, I am still interested in the idea of how form exists in space, how this can be experimented with through paint application and how colour can create a sensory experience for the viewer,” she says.

Rebecca Hossack Gallery is pleased to announce Touch, an exhibition of thirteen new paintings by New Zealand-based artist, Holly Zandbergen, which explores colour and mark-making through alternating subjects of mountains and flowers. 

Using an impasto application of paint, variables such as speed, force and motion activate endless possibilities within each mark to represent the strong and opposing forms of mountains and the fragility and impermanence of flowers.

Although naturalistic in their subject matter, the paintings also cross over into moments of abstraction. Up close, the eye sees an array of colour and a multitude of painted layers, but when moving back, the individual marks consolidate into a recognisable form. Zandbergen’s trust in instinct and intuition has become a driving force of the series as a whole and has allowed her to take a playful approach to painting.

London, New York, Toronto, Seattle and Timaru are just some of the places Holly Zandbergen paintings have been shown since she graduated from the Dunedin School of Art in 2013 and immediately headed for the United Kingdom.

And she’s worked hard for her international success. While based in London, working as an au pair, the 26 year-old who is originally from Timaru, continued to paint, entering her work into various competitions, winning awards – notably the Best Young Artist award at the National Open Art Competition in London in 2015 – and being shown at various galleries, including a solo show for the ‘River Series’ at the Graham Hunter Gallery in London. Crucial exposure which bought her to the attention of Rebecca Hossack.

Hossack has two galleries in London and one in New York, in addition to being a regular on the international art fair circuit. Signing with Hossack in 2016 has meant that Zandbergen has gained an impressive amount of offshore exposure for such a young artist.

Proving that talent and tenacity really are a winning formula. Zandbergen who returned to New Zealand in 2016 is now based in Christchurch where she continues to paint and exhibit. Her most recent body of work ‘Compositions of Nature’ will have its first showing at Black Asterisk from June 14th to July 18th.

Landscape has been Holly Zandbergen’s painterly preoccupation over the last few years. Mountains iced with snow, tumbling, murky bodies of water, verdant tracts of native bush and the most recent iteration, flowers in her mother’s garden.

Working in oils and using the impasto method, Zandbergen layers her paint on, she says, by instinct rather than eye, though quite often uses photographs as her starting point. However, the paintings aren’t about capturing a moment in time preserved in its actuality by a photograph, but consolidating the wholeness of her subjects, across the day and the seasons, capturing the ever changing light and shadow, be it on a mountain or a corner of a domestic garden with its cacophony of colour.

Abstract her paintings may be but the subject matter is always instantly recognisable, both visually and viscerally. Lush, richly textured and full of movement, her paintings capture and reveal the essence of her subject matter rather than its specificity allowing the viewer to bring their own experience to the act of seeing.

The Vauxhall School Exhibition of Fine Art (VEFA) is held every two years and is the school’s major fundraiser. VEFA celebrates the vitality and vibrancy of the arts and the flow-on benefits art provides our children and community.  Since its inception in 2007 by artist parents at the school, VEFA has grown into a popular art event supported by New Zealand artists and enjoyed by thousands of visitors from all over Auckland.

Holly Zandbergen's landscape paintings, whilst reflecting on particular moments in the natural world, are also informed by a sense of the present moment, its changeability and possibility.

Depicting the Southern Alps of her native New Zealand through confident impasto - thick layers of oil paint built up with a palette knife -  Zandbergen’s works resonate with frenetic energy. Each mark on the canvas reveals a different momentum in her application. As striations of pinks, reds and yellows intermingle with a naturalistic palette of whites and blues, Zandbergen’s practice reveals the multiple workings of a human response:

The exhibition will feature ten major works, which draw on the imagery of award-winning New Zealand photographer and environmentalist Craig Potton.

Zandbergen was shortlisted for the New Zealand Art Show Emerging Artist Award, and went on to exhibit at the National Open Art Competition at London's Royal College of Art. There she was selected for the Prudential Best Young Artist Award. In 2016, one of her works was selected for the Columbia Threadneedle Exhibition, and toured to Florence's Palazzo Strozzi. I Sit in the Blue of the Hills will follow an exhibition of Zandbergen's work at the Seattle Art Fair and precede a presentation of her work at Art Toronto.

Holly Zandbergen returned to her hometown of Timaru after two years in London. Gaining considerable recognition in the United Kingdom, particularly for such a young artist, Zandbergen was the recipient of the Prudential Best Young Artists Award in the National Open Art Competition at the Royal College of Art.

In 2013, Zandbergen graduated from the Dunedin School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Arts. Zandbergen held her first solo exhibition in London last year and the exhibition Terrain at the Aigantighe Art Gallery is her first solo exhibition at a public art gallery in New Zealand.

Zandbergen has been given permission to use photos by the pre-eminent landscape photographer and conservationist Craig Potton, as a source for her painting.

Terrain will run in conjunction with this year's Adam Portraiture Award at the Aigantighe Art Gallery in Timaru.

As mist or ice, a wave or brook, a bowl full of goldfish, a pool or a droplet, rivers, vases, splashes, bubbles: there is nothing else in the natural world as varied as water. It can be clear and shallow, or deep and impenetrable. It can restore and destroy. It can transform and be transformative, yet simultaneously reflect a natural continuity. In its various states, water has long preoccupied the painters and sculptors of the Western and non-Western artistic canons, revealing itself to be as spiritual as physical, a vessel through which emotional and intellectual ideas are expressed.

The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery continues this tradition, presenting a group exhibition which celebrates water's disparate forms. The display will include a new aquatic-themed bookshelf print from Phil Shaw, large-scale oil paintings by Emma Haworth, embroidered work by Rose Blake and an op-art interpretation by David Whitaker (1939 - 2007). Roy Wright will be represented by a charcoal river drawing, which will be joined by new work by Esther Nienhuis and Sheila Clarkson. The gallery will also be showing a selection of new artists, including New Zealander Holly Zandbergen with her impasto oil series on Antarctica and Marine Crosta's ocean-themed tondi. Joining the display of Western artists will be a collection of Aboriginal canvases from the central Australian desert which depict water dreamings.

With the exhibition celebrating water's diverse manifestations through a variety of media, the theme of water ultimately serves to reveal the multiple workings of a human response, its possibility and flexibility.

Holly Zandbergen’s paintings of New Zealand’s contours and edges are firmly rooted in the figurative tradition. And yet her confident mark-making, through impasto layering of oil paint, reveals the multiple workings of a human response. As unexpected veins of bright hues intermingle with a more organic palette, each mark on the canvas reveals a different momentum in Zandbergen's application. Her record of the physical world around her is a highly personalised vision – one that is changeable and multifaceted.

The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery’s December exhibition explores different personal responses to landscape. Joining Zandbergen’s reflections on the wild, Laurence Jones will be represented by his studies of edgelands where man has left a distinct imprint. His focus on hyper-modern buildings results in richly-layered images combining elements of both artifice and reality.

Esther Nienhuis’ Saudade series draws upon direct emotional response to setting. Painting soft horizons through rain-drop covered windows, each work is suffused with a sense of longing and nostalgia for the occluded road ahead.  Dr. Phil Shaw will be represented by his new Truth in Black and White with Some Grey Areas, featuring titles such as ‘The Mountain of Truth’, ‘The Ocean of Truth’ and ‘The Truth About Global Warming’, all representing our appropriation of the natural world and desire to understand it.

More figurative appreciations of the natural world will be reflected in Roy Wright’s charcoal drawings of London parkland, joined by Sheila Clarkson’s pastel works of forest pools, where working in white on black, she picks out the light’s scintillations. Both revel in nature’s intricacy, the delicate balance of its structures.

“The 2016 edition of Auckland Art Fair demonstrated a commitment to professionalism in an airy, well laid out and light-filled venue known as The Cloud, located on the edge of downtown Auckland’s scenic harbour. The presentations, which allowed visitors to sample some of the strongest works currently being produced in the region, were also cognizant of the larger international context in which most of the artists operate. Overall the fair offered a mix of intimacy, approachability and confidence, which bodes well for the future of the event as a leading fair for the region.”

Holly Zandbergen made a real splash at last year’s National Open Art Competition. She is an exciting artist, attracting much attention from galleries and collectors. Holly brings the full weight of her process and expression to bear in her paintings. Wimbledon Art Studios is a well established vibrant hub of contemporary art and twice a year opens its doors for a four day ‘Open Studios' art show. At the show the public are invited to come and buy directly from the artists. It’s an ideal opportunity to view their latest work and to buy the work commission-free.

A wide variety of work is available across many disciplines including: painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, photography, printmaking, picture framing and furniture design - there is something of interest for everyone.

The last Open Studios art show attracted over 4,000 visitors, some regulars but many new people promising to return for the next show. It is the largest single site Open Studios Art Show in Europe.
